Comments: This ancient candelabrum belonged to Thomas Jenkins, a British painter who became a wealthy art dealer in Rome and an agent for some of the many British artists living there. He also bought works of art for noblemen on the Grand Tour, the months-long journey across Europe that was the culmination of an aristocratic education. This was also Piranesi's clientele, and so it is natural that he and Jenkins knew each other.

Piranesi worked on the drawings for this series of etchings during the last decade of his life. The etchings themselves were probably all executed by his son Francesco and his studio, some after Giovanni's death.
