Piranesi took the part of his ancestors in a heated scholarly debate about which ancient culture was superior, the Romans or the Greeks. This imaginary palace façade was part of an article he published in favor of Roman architecture. Piranesi argued that the architects of ancient Rome were both more systematic and more inventive than their Greek counterparts. He illustrated this position with designs that showed how creatively the basic elements of Roman architecture and ornament could be used.
Originally published in 1765, the Osservazioni had a second printing in 1767. At that time Piranesi added five more images, including this one. Granted the title of knight, or "cavaliere" in that year, he added that to his signature in the new works.
