Constructed on the foundations of a temple to Neptune, it became a temple to the emperor Hadrian-elevated to the status of a god after his death. It was then reconstructed for use as the customs house in the 1600s. Piranesi shows the ancient, crumbling columns carefully preserved in the Baroque-style wall. Today the building houses the Italian Stock Exchange. Note that the price of this print-"paoli due e mezzo," or 2* paoli-is etched into the lower right corner.
