Comments: This study is one of a group of known drawings for a painting Delacroix exhibited in the Salon of 1827, Count Demetrius de Palatiano in Suliot Costume. Like many of his contemporary Frenchmen, Delacroix sympathized ardently with the Greeks in their struggles against the Turks. Thus, the artist was attracted to the subject of the Greek warrior for its political connotations as well as for the visual richness of the exotic costume. Count Palatiano was a Greek aristocrat whose costume has been linked with the Suliots, a militant group of Greek freedom fighters.
