Comments: Au was born in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1947. Alan DuBois, former curator of decorative arts for the Arkansas Arts Center, asked the artist how her ceramic work reflects growing up in an island environment. She replied, "When I am looking out over the bay, the ocean gives me a sense of immensity and strength that carries over into my daily living and, naturally, to my work." DuBois then commented, "On beautiful days, everything is calm except for the waves crashing in. Sometimes the enamels painted on Au's ceramics reflect those waves as 'little eruptions' on the surface of the vessel."     Au's work is very organic unlike much of today's mass-produced ceramics. They are celebrations of the earth's imperfections. Hence, her work welcomes the cracked patterns and symmetrical properties. DuBois took this a step further, "Her objects with large peaceful areas surrounding subtle eruptions include not only issues such as identity and translating the immensity of ocean and desert space into her objects but a moral consciousness of man coming to terms with his social, cultural and physical environments."
