(22.54 cm x 30.16 cm) Andrew Newell Wyeth (Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, 1917 - 2009, Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania) Object Type: Drawing Medium and Support: watercolor on paper Credit Line: Arkansas Arts Center Foundation Collection: Purchase, Tabriz Fund and Museum Purchase Plan of the NEA. 1971.009.001 Accession Number: 1971.009.001 Comments: Andrew Wyeth, one of twentieth-century America's best known and best loved artists, is widely appreciated because his acute true-to-life rendering and stark genre subject matter seem to champion old values and traditional ways. Though all this may be so, one should not conclude that his works are mere snapshots in paint. Wyeth has said, in fact, "I honestly consider myself an abstractionist." His colors, tones and textures are purposely employed and his compositions carefully arranged to impart specific moods and intuitive feelings. For Wyeth, the expanse of indistinct landscape to the right, approximately half the total picture area, is an evocative space that imparts a sense of the unknown. The long horizontal grey shape in the background diminishes to a point as it courses from left to right, psychologically propelling the figure toward that unknown. The color scheme of brown, grey, cream, and white is subdued, and the temperament of the scene is reserved. Wyeth often depicts a solitary human figure playing out a quiet, dignified, personal drama. Her the subject's standing outdoors in the snow and cold, eyes squinting from the glare, can be read allegorically as the black person's predicament and struggle in the white person's world.
