Comments: In Jim Dine's "Mauve Figure", 1978, we look up to the monumental presence of a woman placed high on the picture plane. The figure emerges not only out of darkness, but out of the handmade paper itself, in the way that sculpture emerges from a block of stone. The paper has been tormented with scraping and reworking, allowing the figure to make its presence known. The sculptural light of the forms and surfaces and the chiaroscuro of the cape and gown create a presence that is less mysterious than it is powerful and majestic.
