Comments: The pyramid tomb of the wealthy Roman official Caius Cestius is one of the most unusual and recognizable monuments in Rome. Built after his death in 12 B.C.E., it abuts a medieval gate, the Porta S. Paolo. Piranesi uses tiny figures to exaggerate the structures' relative scale and employs viney overgrowth to emphasize the romantic, ruined quality of the scene.
