Comments: As an artist, Giorgio Morandi (1890-1964) is remembered best for his dedication to the subject of still-life. Like his predecessor Paul Cezanne or his contemporary Georges Braque, Morandi injects into the traditional subject, here a still life, modernist tendencies. In his drawing Still Life, from around 1950, the bottles and jars are reduced to line. The depiction is not one where the viewer gets a faithful reproduction of the pieces - as say in a photograph. Morandi opts to give the viewer a chance to consider the integrity of the objects' collective form. The resulting pattern and compositional balance appear to become the real subjects. The small triangular stopper at the upper right gently leads one's eye across the paper. This is stabilized by the weighty squares.
