Woman with a Cactus
1952
20th Century
17 1/8 in. x 14 1/4 in. (43.5 cm x 36.2 cm)

Fernand Léger
(Argentan, 1881 - 1956)

Object Type: Drawing
Medium and Support: gouache on paper
Credit Line: Arkansas Arts Center Foundation Collection:
Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Stewart Orton, Houston, Texas. 1982.021
Accession Number: 1982.021
Comments: For Leger, color was one of the basic elements of nature, "a raw material indispensible to life, like water and fire." The motif of a woman holding a plant can be traced back early in Leger's career, but only in a few drawings and gouaches done in the fifties does one sense a touch of the biomorphic Surrealism seen here.
