Romney, George. (2008). In Encyclopędia Britannica. Retrieved February 20, 2008, from Encyclopędia Britannica Online: http://www.britannica.com/eb/article-9083862

George Romney was born in Lancashire, son of a cabinetmaker who trained under portrait artist, Christopher Steele. Before settling in London in 1762, he traveled from town to town, painting portraits for a living. He established a moderate reputation, but became even more successful after traveling through Italy to study Classical and Renaissance art. Romney wished to expand from portraiture into historical painting, a desire that was never fully achieved. This was partly because upon meeting Emma Hart in 1781, he became obsessed and painted many pictures of her afterwards. His career gradually declined and he returned to his native Kendal where he suffered from mental illness.
