Marsh was born in Paris to American parents, but moved with his family to New Jersey in 1900. He attended Yale University, working as an artist for the Yale Record. This served him well for a move to New York City where he found employment as an illustrator for the New York Evening Post, the New York Herald, Vanity Fair and Harper's Bazaar, 1920-22. From 1920-24, Marsh studied at the Art Students League with John Sloan, Kenneth Hayes Miller and George Luks. In the late 20s, he contributed to the New Yorker, Esquire, Life and other popular magazines. In 1930 he joined Framk K.M. Rehn Gallery, N.Y. where he exhibited annually from 1930-1953. . In 1935, he painted murals for the Post Office Building, Washington, D.C. Yale University Art Gallery honored him with a solo show, 1937, as did the Berkshire Museum, Pittsfield, MA, 1944. His book Anatomy for Artists was published in 1945. He was given a retrospective exhibition at Carnegie Institute, 1946-47, and a Memorial Exhibition at the Whitney Museum, N.Y., 1955.
