Arthur Dove (a.k.a. Arthur Garfield Dove) Painter American (Canandaigua, New York , 1880 - 1946, Long Island, New York) Full name is Arthur Garfield Dove View objects by this artist. |
Of the artists associated with Alfred Stieglitz, the most progressive may have been Arthur Garfield Dove. He was born in Upstate New York and graduated from Cornell University in 1903. That same year he moved to New York City to practice as an illustrator for Collier's, Harper's, Life, the Saturday Evening Post, and other periodicals. From 1907-09, Dove traveled to Europe where he became familiar with modern art, including the work of painters Henri Matisse and André Derain, both known for their use of bright colors. Dove returned to New York in 1910, gave up commercial illustration and met Stieglitz who was also a collector and a patron highly supportive of modernism. In 1912, Stieglitz mounted "Arthur G. Dove First Exhibition Anywhere." According to Ann Lee Morgan, he was the first American artist to show abstract work in a prominent gallery. Dove may have come to abstraction through the Armory Show, which helped to introduce modern European and American art to an American audience.
