American painter, born in Ashtabula, Ohio, and educated at the Cleveland School of Art. At one time a wallpaper designer, Burchfield devoted himself entirely to painting after 1929. His specialty was depicting scenes of American small-town and country life. From 1943 Burchfield concentrated on landscapes in watercolor. His work ranges from the moody, semiabstract canvases of his early period, represented by Night Wind (1918, Museum of Modern Art, New York City), to the intensely realistic genre painting of midcareer, such as November Evening (1931-1934, Metropolitan Museum, New York City), and the highly romantic landscapes, with anthropomorphized natural features, that he began in the 1940s and continued in his later years.
