Evergood was born in New York City, to a Polish-Austrian father (a landscape painter), and an English mother who had studied music in Vienna and art in Paris and Munich. Philip was educated in English boarding schools and attended Cambridge University, where he met sculptor Harvard Thomas. In the early 20s, he studied with George Luks at the Art Students League. In 1923, he was in Paris and studied at the Académie Julien with L'Hote. It was in Paris that he met Bourdelle, Pascin, Man Ray, Signac and Utrillo. He returned to the U.S. in 1925, lived in New Jersey, and began to exhibit at Dudensing and Montross. In 1931, he met Ben Shahn, Reginald Marsh, and exhibited a painting at the MOMA. In 1934, he exhibited at the Whitney Biennial and the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1935, he had a solo exhibition at the Denver Art Museum. The University of Minnesota, Duluth, featured a retrospective of his work in 1953. Tulane University and the Iowa State Teachers College hosted exhibitions devoted to his drawings.
