Italian painter and engraver of landscapes and still lifes. He was born in Bologna and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts there from 1907 to 1913. Morandi became an elementary school drawing teacher in 1914, and during 1915 he served in the Italian army, but left because of ill health. He then returned to Bologna, where he continued teaching, becoming in 1930 a professor of engraving and etching at the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1943 he settled permanently in Grizzana, where he had spent most of his summers since 1927.

Marandi is best known for his still lifes, which often include bottles and vases. His early work, influenced by Italian artists Giorgio de Chirico, Carlo Carrá and other members of a group known as the Metaphysical Painters is characterized by distorted perspective and harsh artificial light. In his mature work Morandi became more concerned with issues such as the relationships between form, light, and color, and sought to depict the essence of objects rather than imply any metaphorical meanings.
